Our world is craving human connection and beautiful things made by real human hands... so By Hand began!
Hi, I'm Jess!
Welcome to By Hand! We are a by-hand greeting card service business. We harvest flowers by hand from our own gardens. Our flowers are traditionally, slow pressed between pages of books and wooden flower presses for weeks, left to preserve their natural beauty. We create every card by hand using our pressed flowers and highest quality papers. For our Signature Cards, we hand write your message in the card and place it in the mail.
Our process is full of purpose - slow and intentional, with great care and attention to detail. It’s not just about “getting the card sent.” It’s about the process and love that went into that card delivered to your loved ones’ hands. We believe that something made with love by human hands holds great warmth in the meaningful moments of life, both big and small.
By Hand is a fruit of my marriage.
My husband is beautifully devoted to the details of my dreams - he always has been. I told him over dinner on a precious rare weekend trip that I had this business idea to sell pressed flower art. He smiled. He told me he liked the idea, but what if we added some human connection to the business. What if we offered a by-hand greeting card service where customers would type out their message to a loved one, we handwrite the card and mail it off for them.
At first, I was skeptical. Me? Writing other peoples’ cards? He continued, “It’s about community, and the importance of a handwritten note. I don’t always have the time and energy to procure a card, write it, and mail it. You would be facilitating community, continued friendships/relationships that fade all too easily. When someone might say nothing at all, you could be the bridge to keep the connection. Or the bridge to avoid the generic, impersonal, empty thank you note. You would be allowing someone to spend their time sharing authentically from their heart.” I LOVE it, I thought! This could do so much good.
By Hand is also a fruit of my motherhood.
It is because of my two little boys that I have the inspiration and zeal for life to run this business. It’s for them too - they are my greatest motivators.
I have an entrepreneurial spirit; I always have. A sidewalk sale greeting card stand when I was 10. A social media blog. A farmers market fresh flower stand. I am a dreamer, a creator, a go-getter, a do-er. I want my boys to see this and know that they too can dream big, work hard, and succeed at whatever they put their mind, heart and hands to.
Most of all, By Hand is a fruit of my faith.
The Lord has so uniquely and beautifully woven together seeds He planted many years before that are now blooming into By Hand. Truthfully, I’ve been headed in the direction of By Hand for a long time, without knowing until now. He has woven together many aspects of my life, to name a few: a deep love of flowers, the delicate skill of pressing flowers (passed down from my mother and grandmother who pressed flowers on their English countrylane), the desire to always be creating with my hands, business savvy as a CPA, and a battle with severe eczema on my hands since becoming a mother (reminding me how powerful the work of our hands truly is). God had a plan with all of this. A good, good plan. A plan I couldn’t see for many years, but He could. He is so gracious and uses all things for good. Let this all be a prayer - for the greater glory of God.
